How do I convert PDF to Markdown?

Extract selectable text directly and read scanned pages with local OCR, then compare, edit and download your Markdown.

  1. Choose the PDF: pick one PDF, or drop it on the page.
  2. Pick the reading mode: “Automatic: text first, OCR when needed” — It uses the PDF's text layer where it is usable and falls back to OCR when a page has no text, too little text, a damaged text layer, or text inside images. “OCR every page” reads every page as an image.
  3. Review and download: compare each page with the original, fix anything in the editor, then download the .md file or “Download Markdown + original pages (.zip)”.

PDF to MD: what converts well — and what to check

Headings, paragraphs and lists from a PDF with selectable text usually come through as plain Markdown that is easy to edit. Tables, formulas, footnotes and multi-column pages need a closer look: check text, numbers, tables and formulas against the original before you rely on the result.

Images are saved in the ZIP, and each page's Markdown links to the images from that page. The ZIP includes extractable images and original page snapshots, so complex graphics can be compared with the source.

Scanned PDFs: local OCR

A scanned PDF has no text layer, so its pages are read with OCR in your browser. Choose the document language from 21 OCR languages, and add a second language when a document mixes two.

OCR results depend on the scan: low-resolution, skewed or handwritten pages produce more mistakes, so look at pages marked “Review this page” before you download. Pro can retry a difficult page: only that page image is sent through LensUp to an AI service, after you confirm, and only successful pages are charged.

Using the Markdown in notes apps, code hosting or an LLM prompt

Markdown is plain text with light formatting, so the .md file opens in any text editor, and many notes apps and code-hosting sites can show it as formatted text. For an LLM prompt, a Markdown version of the PDF gives the model headings and lists instead of page layout; check numbers and tables first, because the model will use whatever you paste.

Download .md vs .zip with page images

Download the .md file when you only need the text. Choose “Download Markdown + original pages (.zip)” when you also want the extractable images and a snapshot of every original page — for example to keep figures next to your notes or to check the conversion later.

Frequently asked questions

Does my PDF leave my device?

Free conversion stays in your browser. With your confirmation, Pro uploads only the selected page image.

Will every detail be preserved?

Check text, numbers, tables and formulas against the original. ZIP includes extractable images and original page snapshots; use the original for complex graphics.

Can I convert a scanned PDF to MD?

Yes. Keep the reading mode on “Automatic: text first, OCR when needed”, or choose “OCR every page”, and pick the document language. OCR runs on your device; check the recognized text against the original.

Does the Markdown keep tables?

Tables are the part most likely to need fixing. Check rows, columns and numbers against the original page and correct them in the editor before downloading.

How large a PDF can I convert?

Up to 50 MB and 200 pages for free, or 128 MB with LensUp Pro. Pages are processed one at a time; a very complex document can still reach the memory or output limit.
